Message from the National Disability Data Asset Council – July 2024
The National Disability Data Asset Council (the Council) had an extra meeting on 30 July 2024 to discuss disability indicators.
A disability indicator is a way to measure disability within the National Disability Data Asset.
The Council talked about how disability will be captured in the first set of data that will be available. They considered advice from technical experts and the Disability Indicator Panel.
The Council talked about how the first set of disability measures will capture people with disability that receive disability-related government payments or services.
The Council agreed to the first way of capturing disability in the first set of data. The Council also agreed that the National Disability Data Asset will need to capture more people with disability and improve over time. They also discussed the information that will be available on the website in accessible formats about the disability indicators.
The next Council meeting will be held in August 2024 and will include a discussion about plans for community engagement.

It can show how many people have a disability and what disabilities they have.
The Council talked about how disability will be captured in the first set of data that will be available, such as facts information and records that will help show how people with disability live.
They considered advice from technical experts and the Disability Indicator Panel.
The Council talked about how the first set of disability measures will capture people with disability that receive disability-related government payments or services.
The Council agreed to the first way of capturing disability in the first set of data. The Council also agreed that the National Disability Data Asset will need to capture more people with disability and improve over time.
They also discussed the information that will be available on the website in accessible formats about the disability indicators.

Message from the National Disability Data Asset Council – May 2024
The National Disability Data Asset Council (the Council) met on 6 May 2024. During this meeting the Council approved the:- priorities for Australian Government funded research and sharing information.
- proposed work and membership of the Disability Data Development Scoping Panel (Scoping Panel), which will provide advice to the Council on future panels they could set up.
- proposed work of the Disability-informed Ethical Oversight Panel, which will review project proposals with a disability perspective to make sure projects do not cause harm to people with disability.
- the membership of the Ethical Oversight Panel will be decided out of session ahead of the next meeting.
- community engagement
- the process for researchers to apply and use the National Disability Data Asset. This includes the Charter requirement for researchers to share accessible findings publicly.

The National Disability Data Asset Council (the Council) met on 6 May 2024.
During this meeting the Council approved the following:
- priorities for Australian Government funded research and sharing information.
- proposed work and membership of the Disability Data Development Scoping Panel (Scoping Panel),
which will provide advice to the Council on future panels they could set up.
- proposed work of the Disability-informed Ethical Oversight Panel,
which will review project proposals from a disability perspective to make sure projects do not cause harm to people with disability.
- The membership of the Ethical Oversight Panel will be decided out of session ahead of the next meeting.
The Council also commenced discussion on:
- community engagement and
- the process for researchers to apply and use the National Disability Data Asset.
This includes the Charter requirement for researchers to share accessible findings publicly.
These two items will be discussed further at the next meeting, which will be held in August 2024.

The National Disability Data Asset Council (the Council) met on 19 February and 12 April 2024.
During these meetings the Council approved:
- their way of operating
- the draft Charter
- the proposed work and membership for the Disability Indicators Panel that will provide support to the Council.
The Council’s way of operating and the Charter will be taken to the Disability Reform Ministerial Council in the first half of 2024 for their consideration and endorsement.
The Disability Indicators Panel met for the first time in April 2024.
The next meeting of the Council will be held in May 2024.

The National Disability Data Asset Council, (the Council) met on 19 February and 12 April 2024.
During these meetings, the Council approved:
- their way of operating
- the Draft Charter, and
- the proposed work and membership for the Disability Indicators Panel that will provide support to the Council.
The Council reinforced the importance of distinguishing the involvement of, and preferencing the views of, people
with disability and agreed in this context that the National Disability Data Asset will use the United Nations definition of people with disability.
Disabled people’s organisations and representative organisations of children and people with intellectual disability are included in this definition.
The Council’s way of operating and the Charter will be taken to the Disability Reform Ministerial Council in the first half of 2024 for their consideration and endorsement.
The Disability Indicators Panel will meet for the first time in April 2024.
The next meeting of the Council will be held in May 2024.
