It is important that people with disability know about the National Disability Data Asset. The Australian Government will work with people with disability as we build the National Disability Data Asset.

One way people with disability are involved is through governance. The National Disability Data Asset is governed by both people with disability and governments. This is an example of inclusive co-governance.

The National Disability Data Asset is inclusively co-governed through the:

  • National Disability Data Asset Council (Council)
  • The Charter that contains acceptable and unacceptable uses of the de-identified data and
  • Advisory panels that provide support to the Council.

You can find more information about the inclusive co-governance by visiting the Council, Guiding principles and Advisory panels pages on this website.

Plans for community engagement

We have been working with the community members of the Council to create a plan for community engagement. In July 2024, we held a workshop to develop an approach to engage people with disability and the wider disability community. More information about the community engagement workshop is on our News and updates page.

We will update our website in 2025 with ways people can help shape the work of the National Disability Data Asset.

Involving people with disability in the design

The Australian Government worked with Disability Representative Organisations to design the National Disability Data Asset. Disability Representative Organisations provided advice on:

  • keeping data safe
  • ethical oversight
  • governance including the Council, Charter and the advisory panels that support to the Council
  • disability indicators
  • data products and insights.

Community engagement during the Pilot phase

Two key community engagement reports were created during the Pilot phase.

In 2021 Purple Orange undertook research with people with disability. They asked people with disability about their views on using disability data for a National Disability Data Asset.

The Sydney Policy Lab undertook research with people from disability organisations in 2021. This information was collected to inform decisions about the creation of a National Disability Data Asset.
