The Department of Social Services (DSS) is responsible for the National Disability Data Asset. DSS works with Australian government agencies, state and territory governments to include data in the National Disability Data Asset. DSS also leads engagement with people with disability and the wider disability community.

The National Disability Data Asset is governed by both people with disability and governments. This is an example of inclusive governance. DSS manages the inclusive governance of the National Disability Data Asset and supports the National Disability Data Asset Council and advisory panels.

DSS works closely with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). The ABS and AIHW lead the technical build of the National Disability Data Asset. The ABS and AIHW also:

  • assist with arrangements to include data in the National Disability Data Asset. These arrangements make sure that data is shared in a safe and legal way.
  • manage the process for researchers to access the National Disability Data Asset.
  • combine de-identified government information for the National Disability Data Asset.

The ABS keeps the information in the National Disability Data Asset safe.
